Tigers and Verlander Win in Chicago

Detroit Drops Chicago 5-4

Justin Verlander is in form in the 1st inning - just before
giving up a 2-run home run to dorky Adam Dunn.

It's time to start looking closer and closer at the stats.  These Chicago White Sox are a dismal 14-20 against AL Central rivals this year, but Detroit accounts for 4 of their wins.  That means the Tigers must stem the tide before the season is over.  Chicago faced Verlander the last time in Detroit on July 15th just after the All Star break and they beat him up 8-2.

And stem the tide is what Justin Verlander did in Chicago Tuesday night at US Cellular Field.  He got his revenge and his 14th victory by giving up only 7 hits in 8 innings.  Granted, the 4 earned runs were spectacular and disheartening 2-run homers by both Dunn and Konerko, but they were not enough to overcome the success the Tigers had against Chicago starter Jake Peavy.

Detroit now leads the AL Central by 2 games again and Chicago falls 4½ back - which was not what the White Sox were hoping for in this critical head-to-head series before they leave on what will be a blistering east coast trip.


The Tigers face Chicago only 7 more times this season and the next is Wednesday afternoon.  We'll all be at CUBS' AC watching it on the big screens in air conditioned comfort.
