The Olympics Today

There will be over 5,535 hours of television programming for the London Olympics.  It is impossible to see everything by the end.  Additionally - there is so much digital media being pumped out into the electron superhighway known as the internet that the 19 or so days scheduled for this version of the spectacle could not even be accommodated by the US National Archives.

Olympic Stadium will be the center of attention, with all medal
presentations being held there on the main podium.

So much planning was accomplished for this and many still bravely forecast dismal results - none less than presidential candidate Mitt Romney (a former Olympic Organizer) and even Der Spiegel (The Mirror) both issuing 'negative' Op-Eds.  Even the Christian Science Monitor has chimed in with a less-than-glorious offering.  Can you imagine trying to handle the millions of visitors who will be going through London for the first time and then trying to calculate how many Port-a-Pottys you will need?  And Remember - English beer is not exactly known to be light (or flavorful).

   The torch lighting event is Friday night (London time - 5 hours earlier than here) and then it's off to the races (literally) to try and catch your favorite athlete or sport.   London 2012 will have 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese — recruited by Oscar-winning Danny Boyle along with a cast and crew of 10,000 to present a quirky, humorous and vibrant vision of quintessential Britain, its history and future.

Here is a handy link to the complete schedule.  The first medal presentations will be Saturday, July 28th.  There was a special "bell ringing" period Friday morning at exactly 8:12am that commemorated the funeral of King George VI.  Now that is special.  Horns and bells all across Great Britain clamored for 3 minutes Friday morn - including a special authorization at Westminster Abbey.

Beach Volleyball will be staged at Horse-Guards Parade Park near
Buckingham Palace.  It's like holding a sand-lot softball game
in the US House of Congress lobby.   Shameful?
