Well.........It is starting to look like every Sunday is going to be a "cardiac test" as we held our breath once again falling behind by 8 points to Illinois and crawling into halftime only down by 3. Have we been here before? It looked like it was going to be bad news for a while and that the Illini were going to continue their 5-game winning streak, which had started Feb. 7th when they beat #1 Indiana. Jordan Morgan came in at the 11:45 mark though, and the overall picture took a huge turn. Michigan outscored Illinois 45-17 when he was playing.
The Wolverines are a totally different team when Junior Forward Jordan Morgan is on the court. It's like night and day. But this day belonged to Trey Burke, who is the 7th Wolverine to eclipse 1000 points as a Sophomore scoring 26 points. He also set a season high at the charity stripe, attempting 10 foul shots and making 8 free throws.
Michigan had slipped to the #7 AP Ranking last week and then tied Wisconsin for 3rd place behind MSU and #1 Indiana in the conference after thumping Penn State a week ago. This game was the first back-to-back win for Michigan in the whole month of February.
The numbers for the Wolverines keep them ranked fairly high in most statistical team comparisons, even though Nik Stauskas played 26 minutes Sunday and scored zero points, missing all of his field goal attempts. That is probably a tribute to the Illini defending guards. This Illinois team has some talents and should be respected going in to the B1G Tournament starting March 14th.
Believe it or not - there are only 4 regular season games left. The Wolverines travel to Happy Valley this week and home again next Sunday against the Spartans. In the B1G Conference the difference between the champion and the rest of a very fine collection of teams will be getting wins on the road. That means the Wolverines are going to have to perform well at both Penn State and again versus Purdue to stay in the conference race.
