Tigers Hold On to Beat Royals 8-7
We thought getting back over .500 would be a party - but it's more like a crowded dorm. Speaking of party - Jose Valverde was on the brink of ruining everybody's day on Saturday and I hope Jim Leyland got the message loud and clear. Dr. "Almost Sorry" immediately loaded the bases after appearing in the 9th with a 4 run lead, then, 2 runs scored on Billy Butler's single. Next. . . Betancourt just barely misses a home run. We reach for the Tums....
Luckily, though, Saturday's game was instead a win for starter Doug Fister (now 2-6) and it was a display of what the Detroit Tigers should have been all year so far. The once surging Kansas City Royals have been tamed and the Tigers Win streak reaches 4.
Behind the wobbly Dr. Almost Sorry the red HOT Austin Jackson ran down a fly ball on the left center warning track for the 1st out of the 9th inning that was a thing of beauty. Then he made an excellent running catch for the 2nd out, turning what looked like a Moustakas single into a sac fly. He saved the game for Fister and for all of us.
Speaking of HOT - We hope you are keeping cool. (Here is some advice if you care.) Power outages have taken their toll on many in the metro area and at CUBS' AC & Colonial Lanes the air conditioners are ON and the beer is frosty cold in the coolers.
Detroit is still 1½ games away from Cleveland in 2nd sitting above .500 for the first time since May 10th. The streaking Chicago White Sox are opening up a lead, however, and lead the Tigers by 4½. There is only one more game until the All-Star Break.
Max Scherzer is on the mound giving a little break to Justin Verlander who might be the AL starting pitcher Tuesday night in Kansas City. So.....Join us at CUBS' AC Sunday afternoon and we'll see if Detroit can win again and sweep these Royals on the big screens while chowing down on some of our famous Pepperoni Twists!!
